THE DAY I KILLED HIS DOG

THE DAY I KILLED HIS DOG

We passed each other on the canal

He walking his little dog

I reversing my car

We nodded

Then smiled

Our smiles integrated

A kind of companionship

I laughed

He laughed

The dog barked

Then scratched the grass

I reversed slowly

His dog vanished

The man roared

I stopped

He beckoned me forward

My dog is hurt he roared

My dog is hurt

The little thing

With a broken back

Scrambled to the bank

The dog in his anxiety

Bit his master

The man gathered the bundle

Into his sobbing arms

He threw the lead over the fence

No need for that now

Then disappeared into the morning

Crying loudly

Leaving me by my car

Petrified
