DEATH OF THE RABBIT

Watership Down-  Murdering Rabbits

At Beggers End we met them

That cold day in November

Hunting cattle on the road

After the  fair in Naas

Out from the trees they came

Struggling on the road

Large heads and eyes closed

Rotting carcasses smelling everywhere

We killed them with our sticks

One blow and easy death

We cast their bodies

Amid the wet dead leaves of autumn

They were easily killed

As they were half dead already

The more we killed

The more that came

Roused  by the dog

They covered the road

Small delicate creatures

Dead and dying

We let the cattle graze

And sent them to eternity

We felt no emotion on the road

A job had to be done

A quick execution

The final solution

Hitler tried and failed

No future for Naas families

Income gone

Children starving

The boat to England

Look what they have done

Little creatures obeyed the scriptures’

Increase and multiply

We cursed the killer inventor

Questioned the cost of progress.
